There are two hospitals in Townsville offering a variety of training opportunities.

Townsville Hospital and Health Service – Queensland Health

The Townsville Hospital (TTH) offers one of the broadest internship experiences in Queensland, if not Australia.

TTH was the first hospital in Australia to offer PGPPP (GP placements) to Interns back in 2005. These GP placements are organized in partnership with Tropical Medical Training. Interns undertake GP rotations into four local General Practices, and a number of past interns are now General Practitioners supervising the current interns within those practices.

TTH was also the first hospital in Queensland to offer rural and remote and indigenous health rotations. TTH interns have the option of undertaking rotations in;

  • Ingham Hospital,
  • Joyce Palmer Health Service on Palm Island and
  • Mt Isa Hospital.

It is hoped that Charters Towers will be added to this list from 2015. Accommodation is provided onsite and interns are able to get a first-hand experience of living and working in these unique settings.

Other innovative terms include;

  • Sexual Health
  • ATODS
  • Community Paediatrics (Child & Youth Mental Health)
  • Radiology
  • Cardiology
  • Gynaecology (a core surgical term)
  • Surgery (North Queensland Minimally Invasive Surgery) – a Public/Private partnership with the Townsville Mater Hospital

Education and professional development for interns comes in many forms. The core terms of Surgery, Medicine and Emergency Medicine provide formal education programs for interns as they rotate through these terms. All other terms present education in less formal settings.

TTH has a wide range of vocational training options for junior doctors to consider. These include;

  • All terms accredited for GP training
  • Anaesthetics
  • Emergency Medicine
  • General Medicine & all medical specialties
  • General Surgery & most surgical specialties
  • Intensive Care
  • Medical Imaging
  • Neonatology
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Orthopaedics
  • Paediatrics
  • Pain Medicine
  • Palliative Care
  • Psychiatry
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Rural Generalist

Mater Hospital – Townsville

The Mater received its first cohort of ten interns in 2014. These interns add to the number of vocational trainees that have been working at the Mater across a number of years. As well as post graduate training, the Mater has a new purpose built clinical education building and works closely in conjunction with the medical school at James Cook University with their 4th, 5th and 6th year students.
